Almost every colonoscopy and endoscopy patient hears the same instruction: you can't drive yourself home after sedation, and someone needs to pick you up. For most people, a family member handles it.

For some, it isn't that simple. Your loved one may live in a different city, in a long-term care home, use a wheelchair, have stairs at home, or still be recovering from an illness that makes a car ride hard. Add the tiring preparation day before the procedure and the drowsiness afterward, and getting there and back becomes the hardest part of the appointment.

Transport After a Colonoscopy or Endoscopy

Who this service is for

Most colonoscopy patients don't need stretcher transport. It's the right fit when you or your loved one:

  • can't sit upright comfortably for the drive, or tires quickly when seated

  • needs hands-on help moving from a bed or wheelchair

  • lives in a long-term care home or retirement residence without a family member free that day

  • has stairs at home and will be unsteady after sedation

Check the clinic's pickup rules first

Endoscopy units and clinics set their own rules about who can take a patient home. Many will not release a sedated patient to a taxi on their own, and some ask that someone stays with the patient for the rest of the day.

Before booking anyone, ask the clinic two questions:

  1. Will they release your loved one to a professional transport crew?

  2. Does someone need to stay with them after they get home?

Our crew brings our clients home safely and hands them over to the person or staff waiting there. We don't provide overnight supervision, so if the clinic requires it, a family member, caregiver or residence staff needs to be lined up for that part.

How we help patients

On the day, two trained crew members collect you or your loved one from their room, home or residence and bring them to the clinic's check-in desk on time.

For most procedures, we recommend Reserved Treat & Return, but you can also book two separate trips, or even a return trip only. With reserved return, the crew and vehicle wait for your loved one through the procedure and recovery, so there's a guaranteed ride home the moment the clinic releases them. Recovery times vary from person to person, and this option removes the worry about it.

The crew then checks in with the recovery nurse, takes any written discharge instructions, and brings your loved one home or back to their residence. Stairs, elevators and getting settled in bed are all part of the trip.

How we help endoscopy units and clinics

When a patient's ride falls through, the procedure is often cancelled on the day. That's a lost booking for the clinic and a delayed diagnosis for the patient, who has already been through the preparation once.

Aurevia gives your team a reliable contact to pass on to patients who don't have a way home, especially those from long-term care and retirement homes. For clinic staff, that means:

  • patients arrive at their booked time, from bed to check-in

  • one point of contact for the patient's family or residence

  • a crew that checks in with your recovery team before leaving

  • written instructions handed over to whoever receives the patient
